What To Look For In Nordic Walking Poles

- Comfortable to use - especially for the hands
- Convenient and hassle-free to use
- Functionally designed to maximize fitness benefits
- Good quality that won't break down & waste your money
The main features to look at are: the handles/grips, straps, rubber feet and method of adjusting/locking pole length, as well as quality of materials used.

Compare to 1-Piece Fixed-Length Poles
1-piece Nordic walking poles are a specific length that can never be adjusted, typically available in 2-inch (5cm) increments. They may be slightly lighter than 2-piece poles (1-2oz./28-56g less per pole).
For regular, everyday people who are Nordic walking, Tone 'n Trek Simplicity poles offer significant advantages over 1-piece poles:
- No guessing what size to buy: one size fits all
- Get exactly the length you want every time
- Flexible to change length as skill level or terrain changes
- Can be shared with others with different heights or torso lengths
- Much more convenient for travel and storage
- More comfortable and simple to use grips and straps
Compare To Hiking Poles
Nordic fitness walking poles are different than hiking poles, which have been around for a long time. The main differences are the handle grips, straps and bottom tips, which are designed specifically to match the way the different poles are used.

If you search around you'll find a lot of poles out there. Using this list as a guide, we encourage you to get specific information about other companies’ poles so that you can determine which are best for your situation. A few other things you may come across:
- Cheap Poles Unfortunately many people buy cheap poles only to find that you get what you pay for: lots of pole vibration & noise, twist-locks that stop working (making the poles useless), uncomfortable straps and cheap traction tips that wear down extremely fast. Sadly, using cheap poles can turn a Nordic walking newcomer off from the exercise forever.
- Poles Without Straps A few companies still sell poles with no straps. While you can get decent benefits from these, using straps gives you even more. Straps allow a wider range of swing motion for added fitness benefits, and they enable you to release your hands from the poles at the end of the backswing for better blood flow to the hands.
- Instructors Selling Poles Many companies aggressively promote their poles as part of their Nordic walking instruction program to make extra money. Choosing an instruction program and choosing poles are two different decisions: the classes last for hours, you'll use the poles for years so get the right poles for you (not your instructor). Tone 'n Trek poles can be used with any reputable instruction program.
